about

A SONG OF YOUR NAME is a delicate paean to the wistfully beautiful animé, Your Name (Kimi no na wa). It features the spellbinding story of a death-defying, tender young love and the way the intricate, deceptively dark machinations of a local deity, a kami, ultimately bring a boy and a girl together across an unimaginable gulf of space and time, helping them rewrite history and save an entire village from dying in the cosmic catastrophe of a falling comet. Creator MAKOTO SHINKAI’S animated romantic fantasy became the highest grossing film of 2016 in Japan, and the third highest grossing anime film of all time, on the strength of its poignantly beautiful story and ravishingly gorgeous visuals, which worked an indelible enchantment upon millions across the globe. Inspired by such stunning and intriguingly original storylines as this, unique to Japanese animé and manga, BALTES & ZÄYN decided to write songs about Neon Genesis: Evangelion and Kimi no na wa.

STEVE BALTES' evocatively melodious instrumental and LUCIAN ZÄYN'S fragile vocal delivery in English and Japanese aptly embody the heart-rending beauty of Kimi no na wa, offering haunting grace notes intimating key scenes of the animé. Voice samples of our future young lovers, Taki and Mitsuha, from the English-language dub, work their magic in the interstices of the song. In contrast to the coldly glittering apocalypse presented by the previous singles GODHATTER and APOCALYPTECH about Neon Genesis: Evangelion, A SONG OF YOUR NAME attempts to suffuse the air with the warm radiance of the innocent, fancy-free beauty and unquestioning love of youth, fading into a night full of fireflies and shooting stars.

A SONG OF YOUR NAME recounts the animé’s story of two teens, Tokyo boy, Taki, and country girl, Mitsuha, who inexplicably trade bodies. They get to know each other’s lives and begin to bond and try to meet in real life. To his horror, back in his own body, Taki discovers that Mitsuha lives in a village that had been destroyed by a fallen comet fragment three years ago, and that the events of Mitsuha’s life he experiences, when trapped in her body, all take place in the past. All the villagers, including Mitsuha, had been killed. Now, both race against time to change history and get Mitsuha’s people to seek safer ground, away from the impact zone. In the course of this intricate dance of souls across space and time, they fall in love with each other. Trading bodies and time frames, finally meeting in the magic hour of the twilight when the comet splits and rains destruction upon the village, our heroes manage to evacuate the villagers from ground zero, while meeting for the first time in the flesh. Yet they forget each other’s name as they are returned to their proper time frames, the price exacted by the local deity, to allow them to change history. But what is a romantic fantasy without a happy ending? Escaping destruction, Mitsuha moves to Tokyo and, as Fate would have it, runs into Taki some years later, the film ending with joyful tears of recognition as both simultaneously ask each other their name.

"Find the wonder of each other’s lives, in a night full of fireflies, while shooting stars blaze across the sky…"
